Habits

I recently was able to read Stephen R. Covey's book "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People". This is a book everyone should read. I was reminded of the "7 habits" this week. Those habits are: 1.       Be proactive. 2.       Begin with the end in mind. 3.       First thing first. 4.       Think “win-win”. 5.       First seek to understand, then to be understood. 6.       Create synergy. 7.       Sharpen the saw. Every one of these seven goals can change our lives and make us better people. It can help us become the people the world needs desperately right now. Just think about number five, “first seek to understand, then to be understood”. What if we listened, and I mean really listened first before we reacted. If we did just this one habit, it could change your world. We would learn things ...

Self-Mastery

Being human, we have the tendencies to do what we feel like doing. For example, I am in school and am taking a full load. There are some days that all I want to do is sit around and watch my “shows”. When I submit to these desires it creates stress later in the week. I don’t have the time to do what needs to be done for my assignments or have the time I want to spend with my family. I read a talk from President N. Eldon Tanner, from the April 1975 general conference of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, titled, “Success is Gauged by Self-Master”. He was speaking to all the men of the Church during this talk, but each of us can learn from the thoughts he shared. What does self-mastery have to do with success? Plato said, “The first and best victory is to conquer self; to be conquered by self is, of all things, the most shameful and vile”. If we can’t master our own desires or emotions, how will we ever get real control of our own lives? President Tanner shared two ...

Hero

What do you think of when I say, "hero's journey"? Who comes to mind? What attributes does your hero have? In a video I watched this week, "A Hero's Journey", the speaker states that "the hero's journey is all about you, but it's not about you at all." What does this mean? He goes on to explain this throughout his talk. He asks, "what does it mean to choose a hero's journey? It means to live every moment of your life like it matters because it does". Every. Single. Moment! Each of us has been told that we were born on this Earth for a reason. We have an important mission. So, we do need to live each moment we are given like it matters, because it really does. We will have setbacks and disappointments, but the fact will remain the same, we are sons and daughters of a loving Heavenly Father, and we were born for great things. We may not be famous, but we still need to live a life of meaning.  The speaker brings this idea int...

Importance

In Elder Joseph B. Wirthlin's talk, "Little Things Are Important", he states, "the question is not one of managing time, but one of managing ourselves with the time we have." I have thought in depth about this all week. What am I doing with the time I have? Am I using it to the best of my ability? Am I doing things for others? Am I learning, growing, becoming a better person? I hope so!  We all have a limited amount of time on this earth, and I think this week was an important time for me to reflect on how I am spending my time and how I am interacting with others during my time here on earth. I want to be remembered as a friend, a loving mother, and one who loved to serve. I have found in my 45+ years of life that there is more to life than money. When all you focus on is the next dollar you miss out on one some of the key moments of your life. The key is to find something you love, and this will make you better at that thing you decide to do.
